The program for the 20th anniversary celebrations of the distinction of Alto Douro Vinhateiro (ADV) by UNESCO was presented this Tuesday in Peso da Régua, Vila Real.

The celebrations will start on December 14 and continue until 2022, in a cycle of events that will last precisely one year. It was exactly on December 14, 2001, that the ADV was classified as World Heritage of Humanity.

As such, the program includes the “Vinha D’Ouro 2022” award, in a partnership with the Regional Directorate of Agriculture and Fisheries of the North (DRAPN), which aims to distinguish good practices in viticulture that safeguard heritage interests that are an example of good environmental practices.

The festivities include the premiere of the opera “Mátria”, as well as exhibitions, concerts, a cycle of seminars and conferences, territory marketing and internationalization actions, not forgetting the launch of the “hymn to the Douro”, in an initiative of the League of Friends of the World Heritage Douro.

A commemorative wine will also be presented, in a partnership between DRAPN and the Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e Porto. The seventh edition of the Douro Architecture Prize, which distinguishes good architectural practices in World Heritage Sites, will have the architect Eduardo Souto Moura, winner of the last edition, on the jury. About the 20th anniversary of the Douro as a World Heritage Site, Célia Ramos (vice-president of the North Regional Coordination and Development Commission) does not exclude other news.

“The agenda to the 20th anniversary of World Heritage Douro is under construction, still open”, explained Célia Ramos, foreseeing a cycle of “more than 100 initiatives over the next year”. The vice-president of the North Regional Coordination and Development Commission also revealed the purpose of the cultural program. “It is a narrative that bridges the gap between the past and the future,” she assured.
